My Nigh With Dr, Sketchy's

I attended my first session of Dr. Sketchy's this past friday night. I had not been before and felt it only fitting since I was their first featured designer.

Wow.

Nicola Black and the Midwives Gallery do such a fine job of putting on a wonderful evening for anyone turning out...be it art monkey or voyeur. They offer an amazing setting that is inspiring in itself, great models, catchy tunes and pleasant attitudes. I don't know what their average turnout is like, but from what I saw, they had a decent number of artists show up. And were they talented! I got to see some great works of art that night.

Dr. Sketchy's has offered me so much on so many levels. My first blog dealt with how, as a designer, working for them was a dream job. They let me do what I wanted in a style I don't normally work in. It was refreshing and inspiring! Now, after having attended one of their sessions, I was brought back to my initial love. Drawing.

The whole reason I went to college was to be an artist. One thing lead to another and I turned my attention to commercial and graphic arts, but it was drawing that brought me there. How I wanted to flip to a crisp clean page in my sketch book...take a minute or two to admire the texture and possibilities it offered me...and then grab my pencil, my pen, my charcoals and just go to it.

In this hectic life we all lead, one can forget what started them on certain paths. I love being a designer. I love being creative. But I miss drawing and the freedom that came with it...especially when it wasn't done for school, for a grade and for a subjective teacher.

I'm not sure if I will ever pick up a pen/pencil/charcoals again, but it has rekindled the fire within to be that creative person yet once again.
